WEYBURN, Saskatchewan – Gund Watercraft Ltd. has entered into a supply contract with several oil and gas operators in southeastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba.  The deal follows record snowfall this past winter and the expected flooding once the weather warms up.  In recent years the floodwaters have become an increasing concern for wells with little or no oil production, as it gets harder to tell if water is spilling out of, or into, the aging pipelines.

“We are just not ready for that kind of water again, because hiring SCUBA divers wreaked havoc on our budget over the last few years.

So this year, instead of hiring expensive 3rd party divers, we’ve decided to equip our operators with special underwater vehicles that will enable them to check on wells with minimal additional training.” – Phil McDogood, Operations manager for Sparrow Energy

Case in point: Shirly McTadde, lead operator for one of Sparrow’s core oil fields in Virden, MB, was recently equipped with a Gund Anaconda TL2000 SSA unit.

“Oh man, this thing is great. I suit up, hop on, and work my way down to the pump jack where I can adjust the chokes and make sure all is going well.

I know this is work, but it feels a bit like a vacation while I’m on this thing. It’s like a jet ski, but it goes *uuunder* water.” – Operator Shirly McTadde checks an oil well near Virden with an SSA unit provided by Dive Deep Into Regina Ltd.

The boats issued according the to the contract will be sized based on pay grade and the results of small, inter-office challenges like pickle eating and longest fart contests that are common in these parts of the country.

They will be purchased on a slim budget however, in an effort to maintain Sparrow Energy’s margins and keep its stock price high.  The bulk of the units are coming from auctions in the lower 48 United States; these watercraft have a proud history of helping out in the recent disasters that have plagued coastal regions in the south.
